Turbulence
Vaulting through the clouds
Climbing higher and higher
Blinding white
I close my window in a hurry.
Resting and reclining then—
My stomach drops.
I'm on a roller coaster!
But then we're flying
And I remember the people are ants
So far below me
And all I can do
Is grab the armrest
Is stare at the worn red seat in front of me
Is brace my legs for another lurch.
I close my book in worry
And try not to think of sirens and yellow masks
Dropping from the ceiling.
I ask for liquor to soothe my nerves
But it turns my stomach to acid
My gum tastes like rubber
And I struggle to breathe properly.
I close my eyes in prayer.
Remind me
To only fly in the summer.
